What is it?
~
A .. A Mala is a tool for keeping one's mind focused on the "recitation" at hand
B .. The Mala is handled with gentleness & respect
C .. The "recitation" can be anything from a sentance to a full Mantra
D .. The number of beads varies with diciplines & needs,
however, 108 beads (for meditaion) plus the Guru bead (for guidance) is the most common
** any number equally divisible into 108 is also common (say, for bracelettes)
E .. in basic Buddhist thought: Each person interacts with the world using the following tools:
6 Senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch, and consciousness) can have
3 Reactions (positive, negative, or indifference), which equal 18 feeling types, each type has
2 Attachments (attached to pleasure or detached from pleasure) making 36 passions, each of which may be manifested in
3 Time periods (the past, present, or future)
--------
108 Human Afflictions
F .. One conditions the mind, so as when the mala is taken up it begins to go into a meditative state on it's own
How to use it
~
1) The large bead is the Guru bead or Teacher Bead
it is never counted or touched, it is a starting & ending point for the set of recitations
2) Hold the Mala in either hand, gently, so as one can move the beads easily
* The Fingers are "inside" the Mala circumference
* The Thumb is "outside" and is used to rotate the Mala by "1" bead at a time, towards oneself with each repetition of the recitation
3) If one wishes to do more than 1 set,
flip the mala around & go back in the direction you came, until you reach the guru bead once more
